"KARATE WISDOM"

     RYUSHO SAKAGAMI

"All forms of martial arts, including Karate-do, start with courtesy and respect. The main idea of Budo is to remove all arrogance and pomposity and replace them with humbleness and the right spirit, and it’s important to display those qualities that were established and sustained by generations of dedicated and devoted martial artists. The true Budo spirit is not something that you can put on and take off at will. It is something you become. It is in everything you do and permeates through all your acts. It puts us in accord with the flow of the universe. It is true that the value of a martial art depends on its application, but the goal is not always self-defense or self-protection. There are some other higher goals in Budo training. In a true martial artist, all of the actions are geared [or designed] so that there is no dishonor or loss of face. The most important thing to keep in mind is that all forms of Budo are not courses of study, but rather, a way of life."
