KARATE WISDOM
FUMIO DEMURA "On Kumite & Kata"
"In kata, there are no
surprises - the movements and sequences are the same all the time. The
important aspect is that the practitioner develop what we call “internal
timing.” This means to coordinate the joints and hips with the delivery of the
techniques. If a practitioner throws a punch and connects, but does not have
the lower body and hips, and breathing properly coordinated, the technique
might not be effective in combat. Kumite develops what we call "external
timing." The practitioner must adjust to changing circumstances and learn
to master distance and space. The bottom line is that both are critical for
success in a self-defense situation. If a practitioner ignores either part of
the training they will put themselves at a disadvantage."
