How do we practice if we experience an injury, illness, or disability? How
can we practice to improve our speed, power, endurance, and focus? Such
questions apply to all martial artists, regardless of the particular style.
These questions are important for those who have been training for
decades, as well as older adults who have been practicing for only a short
time, and even those just beginning. In fact, young practitioners would do
well to consider these questions as they look toward the future.
Master Gichin Funakoshi, considered the “Father
of Modern Day Karate,” demonstrating kata.
This book addresses these questions. It is not intended to teach
specific techniques. Rather, it presents various concepts, strategies, and
principles on how to get the most out of martial arts practice as we age,
execute movements effectively and efficiently, enhance physical and
mental health, avoid injury, approach self-defense, face fear, and ensure
that we are able to practice as long as possible. Many of the ideas
presented in this book apply to martial artists of all ages; however, they
are particularly important for older practitioners.
